Words like “expert,” “best,” “top-performing,” and “hard-working” don’t play in your favor. Sure, you want to seem confident and showcase your talents, but that doesn’t mean bragging is the way to do it. Second, using hyperbole isn’t a smart move. Customized is always the way to go, so fight the temptation to let the platform do the work for you and give a go at writing it yourself. To say that is a mistake is an understatement, as it really can be downright catastrophic. Common LinkedIn Headline Mistakesįirst, above all else, never, ever, ever let LinkedIn choose your headline for you. When neither number looks great on paper, it’s always better to skip the metrics entirely as they really aren’t helping your case. However, if that 2 percent only means $500, then don’t use that either. That might be big enough to catch the hiring manager’s eye. But, if that 2 percent equals a $25,000 increase, then consider putting those dollar signs on display. For example, saying you increased sales by 2 percent looks like a weird flex. Instead, see if you can convert it into something more intriguing. However, if a number doesn’t make you look good, don’t use it. MIKE'S TIP: Numbers visually stand out in a LinkedIn headline, so you want to use them if the metrics are impressive. If you are highlighting an accomplishment where you cut costs by 25 percent, put that number in your headline. Just like on your resume, digits stand out in a sea of letters. Or, if you can be uber concise, maybe a bit of both.įinally, don’t be afraid of numbers. It could also include focusing on a relevant accomplishment. Typically, this involves highlighting your skills that benefit your employer. You have to speak to the needs of your audience, addressing what you can do for them and not what they can do for you. In a similar vein, introducing a value proposition is wise. That way, you are speaking their language, and no translator is required. Instead, embrace the way they would talk about crucial skills and qualities. You have to ditch the jargon, as there’s a decent chance that HR and recruitment professionals don’t know the ins and outs of every niche’s secret language. That means using words and phrases hiring managers and recruiters will recognize, not just other people in your industry. First, they are always tailored to the target audience. The best LinkedIn headlines usually have a few things in common. How do you pull that off? By using the right approach. Aim higher by making yours outstanding, amazing, or even stellar. LinkedIn is littered with profiles where the person stopped at “good.” Don’t be one of them. Your goal shouldn’t be to merely create good LinkedIn headlines. Now that you understand what a LinkedIn headline is, it’s time to look at a critical part of the equation how to make yours as enticing as possible. NOTE: Don’t confuse your Linkedin headline with your Linkedin Summary! What Makes a Great LinkedIn Headline? If they don’t like your headline, they might bypass your profile for a more enticing one. If a recruiter or hiring manager is skimming for profiles to explore, it’s what they usually see first. It actually appears next to your user name in LinkedIn search results. Now, this little introductory statement is incredibly important. That’s right your LinkedIn headline has to be substantially shorter than a tweet. That’s shorter than even the old Twitter post maximum of 140 characters, and less than half of the 280 character tweet length you can use today. The LinkedIn headline is essentially the title of your leading, above-the-fold frontpage story it needs to captivate and pique a person’s curiosity.įunctionally, your headline is where you put a brief overview of who you are and what you bring to the table, brief being a keyword. History will still progress after world generation, concurrently with normal gameplay, but this will, of course, be much slower (around two weeks per session start, in either fortress or adventurer mode). The recommended values for worlds you plan to use for adventure mode are Short or Medium. ![]() ![]() Longer histories will also increase the number of abandoned (sacked) towns and fortresses, which can matter for adventure mode, but conversely, doesn't matter that much for fortress mode. Conversely, shorter histories will take much less time to generate, but may limit some features (civilization size, sites, knowledge, historical artifacts, and necromancer towers). Longer histories will cause world generation to take longer, both because there are more years of events and because there tend to be more events in subsequent years. The actual length of history generation determines the details of the world the history configuration setting only establishes a maximum year at which generation will stop automatically. (Players might choose to do so if they are trying to reach a certain age, if they want to embark near a tower, or if worldgen has slowed to a crawl, for instance). Note that history generation can be interrupted and the world saved far short of the selected history value. The longer the history, the more historical events will be generated by the time gameplay begins. It also determines the amount of time that megabeasts will have to roam and kill things, get killed, etc. A longer history allows more time for civilizations to grow, attack each other, and starve to death before the player can start playing. In their book, The Power of Impossible Thinking, Yoram Wind and Colin Crook they devote an entire chapter to an assessment of Bannister’s feat, and emphasize the mindset behind it rather than the physical achievement. In fact, two Wharton School professors have analyzed the lessons for business of the four-minute mile. That’s Roger Bannister’s true legacy and lesson for all of us who see the role of leadership as doing things that haven’t been done before. Whether it’s an executive, an entrepreneur, or a technologist, some innovator changes the game, and that which was thought to be unreachable becomes a benchmark, something for others to shoot for. In business, progress does not move in straight lines. Well, what goes for runners goes for leaders running organizations. Over the last half century, more than a thousand runners have conquered a barrier that had once been considered hopelessly out of reach. Then, just a year later, three runners broke the four-minute barrier in a single race. Just 46 days Bannister’s feat, John Landy, an Australian runner, not only broke the barrier again, with a time of 3 minutes 58 seconds. At last, somebody did it! And once they saw it could be done, they did it too. When Bannister broke the mark, even his most ardent rivals breathed a sigh of relief. But Bannister did it on a cold day, on a wet track, at a small meet in Oxford, England, before a crowd of just a few thousand people. ![]() On a particular kind of track - hard, dry clay - and in front of a huge, boisterous crowd urging the runner on to his best-ever performance. It would have to be in perfect weather - 68 degrees and no wind. ![]() The experts believed they knew the precise conditions under which the mark would fall. So the four-minute barrier stood for decades - and when it fell, the circumstances defied the confident predictions of the best minds in the sport. The British press “constantly ran stories criticizing his ‘lone wolf’ approach,” Bryant notes, and urged him to adopt a more conventional regimen of training and coaching. Bryant also reminds us that Bannister was an outlier and iconoclast - a full-time student who had little use for coaches and devised his own system for preparing to race. It’s fascinating to read about the pressure, the crowds, the media swirl as runners tried in vain to break the mark. This was truly the Holy Grail of athletic achievement. And like an unconquerable mountain, the closer it was approached, the more daunting it seemed.” “It had become as much a psychological barrier as a physical one. ![]() ![]() “For years milers had been striving against the clock, but the elusive four minutes had always beaten them,” he notes. Bryant reminds us that runners had been chasing the goal seriously since at least 1886, and that the challenge involved the most brilliant coaches and gifted athletes in North America, Europe, and Australia. But it was not until I decided to write about him for my book Practically Radical, and read a remarkable account of his exploits by the British journalist and runner John Bryant, that I understood the story behind the story - and the lessons it holds for leaders who want to bust through barriers in their fields. Most people know the basic story of Roger Bannister, who, on May 6, 1954, busted through the four-minute barrier with a time of three minutes, fifty-nine and four-tenths of a second. As it turns out, when he broke through a previously impenetrable track-and-field barrier, he taught all of us what it takes to break new ground. The sad news of the passing of Roger Bannister, the first human being to run a four-minute mile, got me thinking about his legacy - not just as one of the great athletes of the past century, but as an innovator, a change agent, and an icon of success.
